In today’s class we did a reading about the Empire State Building and reviewed using reflexives (myself, himself, themselves, etc). We discussed how reflexives can sometimes be used for emphasis – for example, the president himself is visiting Odessa! Odessa itself is a beautiful city but the villages around it aren’t very interesting. We also looked at the difference between doing something yourself and doing something by yourself. You should always do your homework yourself (=without help from other people) but you don’t have to do it by yourself / on your own (= alone in a room or a place with no other people).
